Google just made AI Mode monitoring free for everyone. Your pages still have to be the source.

On September 28, 2026, Google Search VP Robby Stein said AI Mode’s info monitoring — previously for Ultra and Pro subscribers — is rolling out to everyone globally. People can ask Search to watch topics across sites, forums, social posts, real-time data, and the Shopping Graph. Google did not say how sources are chosen or whether every update still carries web links. First-party pages that stay fresh are the condition. A dashboard watching your brand is not the same job as being the page a buyer’s monitor can ground.

Google gave every Searcher a background watch. The operator question is whether your first-party pages are what that watch can use.

On Monday, September 28, 2026, Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, posted that Ultra and Pro subscribers had already been using info monitoring capabilities in AI Mode in Search, and that Google is “rolling it out to everyone globally.” He pointed people to try it in the Google app.

Southern, June 12, 2026 (HTTP 200).

The short version

  • Sep 28, 2026: Stein says AI Mode info monitoring is rolling out to everyone globally after Ultra and Pro had it first. Try it in the Google app.
  • How he described it: tell AI Mode what to look for; Search continuously checks changing info on the web (sites, forums, social posts), real-time data sources, and Shopping Graph of 60B+ products; Search may suggest tasks while you are searching.
  • His examples were local and shopping: new restaurants or pop-ups nearby, local holiday things to do with kids, back-in-stock and price-drop updates.
  • At I/O (May 19, 2026), Google introduced this class of product as information agents that look across blogs, news sites, and social posts plus freshest data (finance, shopping, sports) and send a synthesized update with the ability to take action. June 12 Ultra launch (Stein) said agents send “detailed updates and links to the web.” Monday’s global post says “info monitoring capabilities” and does not mention links.
  • Google still has not published how monitors pick sources, how often a given business URL appears, or a language list for this global step.
  • Operator move: keep first-party local, event, inventory, and offer pages crawlable and dated; make NAP / hours / stock / event facts match what forums and social say; run one Google-app monitoring task for your category and screenshot whether the update carries links. Monitoring ≠ execution.

What Stein actually said (Sep 28)

From the full note text on the Sep 28 post (opened this fire):

Our Ultra and Pro subs have been using info monitoring capabilities in AI Mode in Search, and now we’re rolling it out to everyone globally.

Just tell AI Mode exactly what to look for & Search will continuously check across changing info on the web like sites, forums and social posts, our real-time data sources, and Shopping Graph of 60B+ products, so you can stay up-to-date with fresh info. And it’ll even suggest tasks when you’re searching so you can get the latest info when it happens.

It puts Search to work right as you explore, especially for topics you keep coming back to:

New restaurants or pop-ups open near me Local holiday stuff to do with the kids Back in stock & price drop updates

Now rolling out to all users in Search globally – check it out today in the Google app. Lots more to come!

That is the product message. No ranking guarantee. No “brands will be cited X% more.” No claim that a monitoring dashboard you buy is the same feature.

What earlier Google pages said (and what Monday left out)

I/O (May 19, 2026). Google’s Search I/O post said it was starting with information agents that operate in the background, look across the web (blogs, news sites, social posts) plus freshest data (finance, shopping, sports), and send an intelligent, synthesized update with the ability to take action. It said information agents would launch first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers that summer.

Ultra launch (June 12, 2026). Stein’s June post said information agents were available in all AI Mode languages and markets for Google AI Ultra subscribers, that an agent would send detailed updates and links to the web when new info is available, and that Google would expand to more people that summer.

Global step (Sep 28, 2026). Naming shifted to info monitoring capabilities. Audience is everyone globally. The Shopping Graph 60B+ products line is new in this post relative to the June note we opened. Links to the web are not restated. Languages are not listed. The date Pro access began between Ultra-only and everyone is not stated.

SEJ’s Sep 29 write-up (adjacent clock) makes the same honesty cut we will keep: local businesses and retailers cannot yet tell from either Stein post how often monitoring updates will surface their sites or send visits. That is not a New Reward invention — it is what Google left unpublished.

What this means for a New Reward operator

  1. Treat monitoring as a buyer behavior, not a ranking badge. Someone can now park a watch on “pop-ups near me,” “kids holiday events,” or “back in stock / price drop” without re-running the query every week. Your job is to be a clear, fetchable first-party source for the facts those watches need — hours, events, inventory, offers, locations — not to claim Google will push you into every alert.
  2. Ship the pages monitors can ground. Event calendars with dates and cities. Inventory / “back in stock” pages that update when stock changes. Offer and price pages that match Merchant / Shopping reality if you sell products. Local service pages with NAP and hours that match Google Business Profile. Forums and social posts are in Stein’s source list — inconsistency between your site and those surfaces is a visibility problem, not a reason to spam Reddit.
  3. Separate three different “monitoring” words. (a) Google’s consumer AI Mode info monitoring (this announcement). (b) Search Console generative AI impression reports (pages shown in AI Overviews / AI Mode — impressions, not a promise of monitor-alert traffic). (c) Third-party AI-visibility dashboards. None of those three ships the page. Monitoring ≠ execution.
  4. Run one proof loop in the Google app. When the rollout reaches the account you use, set a monitoring task that matches your category (restaurant openings in your city, a SKU back-in-stock phrase, a seasonal local event). Save whether the update includes outbound links, which domains appear, and whether your domain appears. That is evidence. It is not a market-wide rate.
  5. Keep AI Mode / AI Overviews eligibility honest. Google’s AI-features documentation still says that to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and that meeting requirements does not mean Google will crawl, index, or serve the content. Info monitoring sits on top of that web. It does not replace those conditions.

Honesty block

  • Google did not publish how AI Mode chooses which sites, forums, or social posts appear inside a monitoring update.
  • Google did not restate “links to the web” in the Sep 28 global post (June Ultra post did). Do not promise alert traffic or citation counts Google did not publish.
  • Google did not publish a language list, country list, or exact Pro-tier start date for the step between Ultra-only and everyone.
  • Google did not publish a percentage of monitors that include a given brand, a CTR for monitoring updates, or an AI Overviews impression lift tied to this rollout.
  • “Shopping Graph of 60B+ products” is Google’s figure from Stein’s Sep 28 post — not a New Reward measurement and not a promise your SKUs are in it.
  • Search Console’s generative AI performance report measures impressions in generative AI features; it is not the same product as AI Mode info monitoring alerts. Do not mash the two in a client deck.
  • OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, and Bing did not confirm anything about this Google rollout in pages we opened this fire.
  • No invented caps on how often New Reward customers appear after a scan or after a monitoring task.

Google just called manual fact-check of AI content “critical.” Titles and schema count too.

On October 1, 2026, Google Search Central updated its guidance on using generative AI content on your website. The docs now say generative models predict a likely sequence of words from training data, so outputs may contain inaccuracies (hallucinations), and that it is critical to manually fact-check and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing. That review also applies to metadata that can appear in Search results — title elements, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt text. Google did not publish a new ranking formula, a citation rate for AI Overviews or AI Mode, or an end date for the September 2026 spam update. Conditions and proof still beat another dashboard seat.

OpenAI just shipped always-on Dots. Proactive research is read-only — your pages still have to be fetchable.

On September 29, 2026, OpenAI launched Dots — always-on agents in ChatGPT. Help Center pages opened this fire say a dot can look for useful updates before you ask (“proactive research”) by reading permitted connected sources and saving private notes. Those research tools cannot send messages, change content through plugins, or control a browser or computer. Cloud browser use is a separate capability for assigned work. OpenAI did not publish ranking formulas, citation rates, or a promise that background research will open your first-party URL. Conditions and proof still beat another dashboard seat.

Google’s September 2026 spam update is rolling. Here’s the 14-day operator plan.

On September 24, 2026 at 09:15 PDT, Google’s Search Status Dashboard released the September 2026 spam update. It applies globally and to all languages. Google says the rollout may take up to two weeks. This is the fourth spam update of 2026 after March, June, and August. Google did not name a new spam tactic in the incident note. Annotate Search Console during the window, review spam policies if rankings move, and do not invent a targeting story Google did not publish.
