Google’s September 2026 spam update is rolling. Here’s the 14-day operator plan.

On September 24, 2026 at 09:15 PDT, Google’s Search Status Dashboard released the September 2026 spam update. It applies globally and to all languages. Google says the rollout may take up to two weeks. This is the fourth spam update of 2026 after March, June, and August. Google did not name a new spam tactic in the incident note. Annotate Search Console during the window, review spam policies if rankings move, and do not invent a targeting story Google did not publish.

Search Console can finally split text Web from camera Web. Use that filter in the generative report too.

On September 24, 2026, Google Search Central announced Search Console reporting for web multimodal search in both the Search results Performance report and the Generative AI features report. The new Search type filter covers Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search, and Chrome’s right-click “Search this image.” Text Web queries and camera/image Web queries are no longer one blended number. Measure them separately. Fix crawlable `<img>` proof pages the boring way.

Digiday’s Sep 22 write-up of Comscore’s Q2 2026 AI Intelligence Report says ChatGPT’s share of prompt volume fell from 70% to 50% between January and June 2026 while Gemini and Claude gained, and desktop Google searches with an AI Overview rose from 25.8% (Jul 2025) to 39.4% (Jun 2026). The same report split “sourced” from “cited.” Measure assistant by assistant. First-party pages still have to be crawlable.

Google is signing some agent requests. That is identity, not a citation.

Google is experimentally signing a subset of `Google-Agent` requests with the IETF Web Bot Auth draft. The WG adopted `draft-ietf-webbotauth-httpsig-protocol-00` on September 1, 2026. Cryptographic identity helps you allowlist bots. It does not invent a ranking signal or guarantee you get cited.
